A systematic literature review about local wisdom and sustainability: Contribution and recommendation to science education

The theme “local wisdom, sustainability, and education” attracted the attention of researchers, and the number of publications began to increase, making it interesting to study. This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to review various research published in journals indexed in Scopus database related to the theme “local wisdom, sustainability, and education”. The review focuses on publication trends as well as the contributions and recommendations that can be obtained. Disbursement was focused on the largest database in the world (Scopus), where 186 articles were obtained. preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis model was used to obtain suitable articles, so that finally only 10 articles met the criteria to be analyzed. We obtained data that the dominant research was conducted using a qualitative approach or method. There is no dominant author, and all authors are not related to each other. Local wisdom and sustainability “meet” in the word Indonesia, showing Indonesia’s position and urgency in this study. The theme “local wisdom, sustainability, and education” is still not an interesting issue asking for international collaboration, so research collaboration is still local. We discuss all the findings. We also discuss the contributions and recommendations of the 10 articles analyzed, which can be grouped into aspects of sustainable agriculture, sustainable watershed management, implementation of environmental education curricula, and teacher professionalism development. Contributions and recommendations are aimed at all aspects of education (both formal, non-formal and informal education). Findings can be a consideration or baseline for researchers to study theme of “local wisdom, sustainability, and education” according to their respective backgrounds and objectives.

Towards sustainable management of agricultural resources: A framework to assess the relationship between water, soil, economic factors, and grain production

As the requirements for environmental protection and high-efficiency economies increase, grain production (GP) across the globe faces more stringent ecological constraints and economic pressure. Understanding the relationships between natural resources and economic and agricultural factors in grain-producing regions is paramount for ensuring global food security. This paper proposes a methodological framework to explore the relationships between water and soil resources (WSRs), economic input factors (EIFs), and GP. We employed the northeast region of China as a case study to advance our understanding of the factors driving the development of grain-producing capacity. We first constructed and calculated the region's water and soil comprehensive index (WSCI) to describe water-soil properties. We then used hotspot analysis to explore the spatial agglomeration characteristics of WSRs, EIFs, and GP. Finally, we used threshold regression analysis to understand the effects of EIFs and GP with the WSCI as the threshold variable. With the improvement of the WSCI, the positive impact of fertilizer and irrigation on GP shows a U-shaped curve in elasticity coefficients. The positive effect of agricultural machinery on GP decreases significantly, and the impact of labor input on GP is insignificant. These results provide new insights into the relationship between WSRs, EIFs, and GP and a reference for improving GP efficiency globally. This work thus contributes to advancing our capabilities to enable food security while considering aspects of sustainable agriculture in important grain-producing regions across the globe.

Sustainable development in agriculture with a focus on decarbonization

This article examines sustainable agriculture's core objective: reducing environmental impact while ensuring continuity in food production. It distinguishes agroecology from sustainable agriculture and organic food production. The feasibility of sustainable organic food production in controlled settings is explored, especially for animal farming. The paper underscores agriculture's substantial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the pressing need for action. It discusses the intricate relationship between agriculture and climate change, emphasizing the challenges in meeting emission reduction targets within the sector. In this article, Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) is explored as a viable method to reduce agricultural emissions. Additionally, EU policies such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), are designed to align agriculture with climate objectives. Integrating agriculture into CBAM presents challenges due to the absence of a carbon pricing mechanism. EU's policies and EU's CBAM in this paper are given just a good decarbonization model that can be implemented worldwide. Balancing environmental preservation, economic stability, and international relations is complex in agriculture, as a significant emitter of GHGs. Innovative strategies like Agricultural Sector Management and Carbon Absorption offer promise in reducing agricultural emissions. This study employs a triangulation approach and contributes significantly to the field of sustainable agriculture. It explores various aspects of sustainable agriculture, tackles challenges related to climate change, and presents decarbonization strategies. These findings have relevance for all who are involved in agriculture and environmental sustainability.

A bibliometric analysis of sustainable agriculture: based on the Web of Science (WOS) platform.

The global trends of sustainable agriculture (SA) have expanded dramatically through many scholarly studies in this area. Many literary works have focused on several aspects of sustainable agriculture (SA), such as the effectiveness of pesticide management, impacts on cultivation and enhancement, quantifying with soil, water, and air, agro-ecological activities, ecological aspects, and other areas of focus. The review offers a structured bibliometric and network evaluation that will profoundly observe the recent trends of SA, which other studies in this field have not comprehensively analyzed before. The study's prime objectives are to investigate the progress, trends and themes, and provide a comprehensive mapping of the field of sustainable agriculture. The study utilizes the Web of Science core collection database to search, filter, and extract the published article from 1992-2020. The review commences by exploring over 3000 journal articles, those then filtered into some well-recognized matrix of impacts and published by impactful journals, institutions, and authors. The results indicate a stable growth in publications since 2006, with a sharp improvement from 2010. Thematic assessment of key concepts by exploring the abstract discovered a robust emphasis on quantitative resource associations within a strong subjective focus with farm capacities and inner-sectorial dominations. We reveal how the outcome may assist the sectors to facilitate better understandings and comprehend the challenging transitions based on brainstorming to action formulation.

Integração Lavoura-Pecuaria-Floresta no Brasil:

Esse artigo tem como objetivo inserir a proposta de organização da agricultura baseada nos conceitos da integração lavoura-pecuária-floresta (ILPF) no âmbito das discussões relacionadas à necessidade de transformação do modelo produtivo vigente. Utilizamos as diretrizes e os conceitos relacionados com a proposta Green Economy Initiative (GEI), que é uma iniciativa do Programa das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente (PNUMA). Isso porque o setor agrícola é identificado, dentro dessa proposta, como um setor importante, pois apresenta uma estreita relação com aspectos econômicos, sociais e ambientais. Busca-se mostrar que a proposta ILPF, além de alinhada com os aspectos de agricultura sustentável proposta na GEI e no PNUMA, coloca-se como uma importante estratégia do Brasil - incentivada por programas de governo específicos, como o Plano de Agricultura de Baixo Carbono (Plano ABC) para atender ao aumento da produção agropecuária, de forma sustentável.

What Is Sustainable Agriculture? A Systematic Review

The idea of a sustainable agriculture has gained prominence since the publication of the Brundtland Report in 1987. Yet, the concept of sustainable agriculture is very vague and ambiguous in its meaning, which renders its use and implementation extremely difficult. In this systematic review paper, we aim to advance understandings of sustainable agriculture from a social science and governance perspective by identifying areas of complementarity and concern between emerging definitions of sustainable agriculture. For this purpose, we conducted a structured literature review in combination with a cluster analysis in order to (1) identify the overall ideas and aspects associated with sustainable agriculture; (2) detect patterns and differences in how these ideas and aspects are adopted or applied; (3) evaluate how the different ideas and aspects of sustainable agriculture are combined in the scientific debate, and assess whether these different conceptions match with those that have been claimed to exist in the debate. There are two valuable outcomes from this research. The first is a framework for understanding the components of sustainable agriculture. The second outcome is in highlighting ways for actors involved with sustainable agriculture to deal with the complexity and multiplicity of this concept in a constructive manner.

Efforts to Support Sustainable Agriculture with The Understanding of Invasion and Colonization Egg Parasitoid of Yellow Rice Stemborer, Scirphopaga Incertulas Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Bali

The arrangement of sustainable agriculture in Bali which appropriate with Bali government’s mission: Bali Clean and Green 'Go to Organic'. The concept of modern agriculture looks like contradiction with the aspects of sustainable agriculture. The aspects of rice cultivation have been done by local agriculture community in Bali (call it SUBAK) for many years, but the attack of yellow rice stemborer still happen, which adverse farmer’s side, persist. The efforts control which has been done, still rely on insecticides because it can give quick effect, but it is not appropriate for sustainable agriculture. The other solution to solve that issue is with the integrated pest management (IPM), as the main component of which is the role of parasitoids. Therefore needed research to investigate the invasion and colonization of yellow rice stemborer parasitoids in Bali. The research was conducted in three districts centers of rice stemborer (Badung, Tabanan, Jembrana), since December 2013 to March 2014. This research using survey method with the rule is collecting the group of egg with purposive random sampling at 10 - 66 days after planting (dap), as many as 70 groups of eggs per week. The observed of variables include the percentage of infected eggs, diversity, dominance, similarity, abundance, attack level and ratio of female parasitoids. The result showed that invasion and colonization of the egg parasitoid of yellow rice stemborer in Bali vary in diversity, dominance, abundance, the percentage of infected eggs and attack level. Three types of parasitoids associated with rice plants, they are Trichogramma japonicum, Telenomus rowani and Tetrastichus schoenobii. The percentage of infected eggs, diversity, dominance of T. japonicum, T. rowani and T. schoenobii, similarity, abundance of T. japonicum, T. rowani and T. schoenobii, attack level of T. japonicum, T. rowani and T. schoenobii and ratio of female of T. japonicum, T. rowani and T. schoenobii found in Tabanan regency, were (90.14%; 0.32; 0.00; 0.06; 0.49; 100%; 96.16; 424.09; 1.193,54 tail; 1.30; 11.98; 85.13%; 77.36; 84.67; 79.51%), in Badung regency were found (83.68%; 0.42; 0.02; 0.12; 0.26; 100%; 199.94; 471.14; 708.83 tail; 5,22; 20,61; 64,25%; 76.48; 83.44; 77.63%) and at Jembrana regency were found (78.61%;0.39;0.02;0.35;0.07;100%;144,76;635,97; 293,15 tail; 4.79;39.43;50.20%;75.83;80.77; 75.30%). The above data’s as a basis for determining the measures to support sustainable agriculture.

Issues for Agricultural Extension Policy in Nigeria

Agriculture is the bedrock of economic development in Nigeria. However, the development of the sector cannot be achieved without an efficient and effective extension system. Thus, there is the need for a well articulated and comprehensive Agricultural Extension Policy (AEP). It is against this background that the paper examines the content of agricultural extension sub-policy in the current Nigeria’s Agricultural Policy with a view to establishing the need for a National Agricultural Extension Policy (NAEP). Issues in Extension Policy formulation; extension goals, approach and functions, subject matter, geographical coverage, target beneficiaries, organization, staffing, funding and stability were examined and how they could be addressed in the proposed AEP. The paper suggests as the goal; achievement of a well organized extension system for efficient and effective extension delivery in all aspects of sustainable agriculture and rural development to attain food security, poverty reduction, rural empowerment and environment management. It concludes with a summary of key recommendations for the proposed Agricultural Extension Policy. These include constituting a committee on NAEP to be chaired by the PS, FMAWR and the policy should make extension agenda farmer-driven and participatory. Also, decentralization of Nigerian agricultural extension system and its efficient coordination at various levels to ensure effectiveness and sustainability.

Sustainable agriculture and free market economics: Finding common ground in Adam Smith

There are two competing approaches to sustainability in agriculture. One stresses a strict economic approach in which market forces should guide the activities of agricultural producers. The other advocates the need to balance economic with environmental and social objectives, even to the point of reducing profitability. The writings of the eighteenth century moral philosopher Adam Smith could bridge the debate. Smith certainly promoted profit-seeking, private property, and free market exchange consistent with the strict economic perspective. However, his writings are also consistent with many aspects of sustainable agriculture. For example, Smith argued that people ought to exercise restraint in their pursuit of self-interest, and he believed in balancing economic with environmental and social considerations. If both sides of the debate more fully regard the work of Adam Smith, then proponents of the strict economic perspective might be more appreciative of the concerns raised within the sustainable agriculture community, while advocates of sustainability might be more effective in achieving the objective of a sustainable agriculture.

For a Sustainable Agriculture, We Need More Adam Smith, Not Less

One implication is that advocates of sustainable agriculture might be more effective by actively promoting the work of Adam Smith.

Environmental, Economic and Social Aspects of Sustainable Agriculture in American Land Grant Universities

ABSTRACT Agricultural sustainability is challenging ‘conventional’ or ‘mainstream’ agriculture as the dominant organizing paradigm for teaching research, and outreach in American land grant universities. However, not all faculty members subscribe to the tenets of sustainable agriculture. This paper examines how a sample of faculty members from all land grant universities in the U.S. view sustainable agriculture. Results show that, in the minds of agricultural academics, agricultural sustainability is closely aligned with enhancing environmental quality. It is less closely tied, for them, to increasing profitability for farmers or with improving the quality of life in rural areas. Results vary by academic discipline and by personal background characteristics.

Quantitative aspects of sustainable agriculture

Abstract Control theory provides methods to calculate optimal control of agricultural ecosystems based on dynamic models. Optimization problems formulated with these models can focus either on small time scales (one vegetation period) or significant larger scales (crop rotations). Performance criteria are developed which include sustainability in addition to economic criteria. An aggregated model simulates crop growth and soil nitrogen dynamics in an ecotope. An optimal control problem is defined with fertilizing as control variable and solved for several performance criteria. Optimization results show that both, acceptable yields and drastic reduction of environmental side effects can be achieved.

Reasons for New Interest in On-Farm Research

ABSTRACT Locating research on a commercial farm is essential for three types of investigation: studies involving 1) management histories and physical conditions not available on experiment stations; 2) farmer management, especially of innovative systems; and 3) ecological effects of whole-farm changes. On-farm research with the farmer involved beyond assisting with operations has advantages in the design, implementation, and dissemination stages. These benefits may warrant locating a project on a commercial farm even if it could also be done on-station. Misunderstandings about the value of on-farm research are often due to its promotion in conjunction with sustainable agriculture and greater political power for farmers. On-farm research, especially with high farmer involvement, is more appropriate for answering some questions critical to developing more sustainable agricultural systems; but other aspects of sustainable agriculture are more suitably studied at experiment station sites. Greater involvement of farmers in all stages of a project is conducive to improving communication and cooperation with agricultural researchers and administrators. However, not all research on farms should have this kind of farmer involvement; and simply increasing the amount of on-farm research does not necessarily augment farmers' political power.
